Each notebook has approximately 60 pages, the soft paper is easy to write on. This notebook is handcrafted by local artisans who complete their designs with a hand-crafted elephant motif, so it may vary from one notebook to another. The process of making paper with elephant dung is different from the process of normal paper, the fibers are chewed by the elephant who then defecates them, then boiled at high temperatures, acting as a disinfectant. Then 25% recycled paper is added. Each leaf is unique, and depends on the diet of each elephant. Making each notebook unique. The inner sheets are made with Sri Lankan rice paper. By purchasing this product you are helping to improve the lives of elephants in Sri Lanka. All products are made by creative artisans using elephant dung paper produced by the Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust. This small institution aims to treat older, sick or disabled elephants. The foundation is still working hard to resolve the conflict between elephants and local communities, as the animals' habitat is dwindling and they end up on the plantations. By working with the Maximus institution, we are able to show the positive relationship that local economies can have with these wonderful animals.
